PTA Makes Key Spectrum Bands Mandatory for Pakistan’s Upcoming 5G Auction

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that participation in the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum bands will be compulsory for all telecom operators taking part in Pakistan’s upcoming 5G spectrum auction.

According to officials, the decision aims to ensure that 5G services rolled out in the country are fully functional and capable of delivering a genuine user experience, rather than remaining limited to pilot projects or partial deployments.

While many countries introduced 5G without mandating specific spectrum bands, PTA has opted for a more structured approach. Authorities believe this strategy will help accelerate nationwide 5G deployment and reduce delays in commercial service availability.

Importance of 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz Bands

Under the auction framework, the 2600 MHz band will support both 4G and 5G services, offering operators flexibility in network planning. Meanwhile, the 3500 MHz band has been designated exclusively for 5G, as it is globally recognized as a core frequency for high-speed, next-generation mobile services.

Although telecom operators may bid for other available spectrum bands based on their commercial strategies, PTA has made participation in these two key bands mandatory to ensure a robust and effective 5G ecosystem.

Officials emphasized that the requirement is designed to push operators beyond experimental rollouts and toward meaningful, large-scale 5G services soon after spectrum allocation.

Mock Auction Planned Ahead of Final Bidding

To prepare stakeholders, PTA will conduct a mock auction before the official bidding process begins. The exercise will allow telecom operators to test the auction software, understand bidding procedures, and familiarize themselves with technical and operational requirements.

Bidding manuals will be shared in advance, and the mock auction will fully simulate the actual process to minimize risks during live bidding.

All Spectrum Bands to Be Offered

PTA confirmed that all six available spectrum bands will be offered on the auction day. Depending on the level of interest from telecom operators, the auction may conclude in a single day or extend over two to three days.

The authority has set February 27 as the deadline for submission of bid documents. Each participating operator must submit a bank guarantee of $15 million, and PTA will also finalize the list of eligible bidders on the same date.

The move marks a significant step toward Pakistan’s long-awaited 5G launch, with regulators aiming to ensure faster deployment and better service quality nationwide.
