HEC Makes AI Course Mandatory for All Degree Programmes From 2026
The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has announced a major curriculum reform by making a three-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) compulsory for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes nationwide, starting from the 2026 academic session.
According to an official notification issued by the commission, the directive applies to all public and private sector universities and higher education institutions across Pakistan. Universities have been instructed to integrate the mandatory AI course into their academic programmes without delay.
AI Course to Be Included Across All Disciplines
HEC clarified that every undergraduate and postgraduate degree programme must include a three-credit-hour AI course. Institutions have been given flexibility in how the course is offered, allowing it to be introduced as an elective, an interdisciplinary course, or a supporting subject within existing programme structures.
The commission emphasized that the integration of AI into academic curricula is no longer optional, but essential in view of global technological advancements.
Preparing Students for a Technology-Driven Future
“In the rapidly evolving landscape of the 21st century, Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a transformative force,” the HEC stated. The commission noted that AI is reshaping industries, education, and professional practices worldwide.
HEC added that the move aims to equip students with practical knowledge and essential skills needed to effectively use AI tools in their respective fields. The initiative is expected to enhance students’ academic performance, improve employability, and better prepare graduates for emerging career opportunities in a technology-driven economy.
The decision reflects HEC’s broader strategy to modernize higher education in Pakistan and align academic outcomes with global digital trends.
