PTA Confirms National Firewall Remains Active Amid Social Media Speculation
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified that Pakistan’s national firewall system is fully operational, dismissing claims circulating on social media that suggested the system had been shut down or could be disabled instantly.
The clarification follows renewed public debate after discussions in the Senate of Pakistan, where Kamran Murtaza raised questions about the firewall’s status and called for an official explanation from the government. Social media rumors had claimed that the firewall could be deactivated with a single command, triggering concerns among internet users and cybersecurity professionals.
Responding to the reports, PTA officials stated that the firewall continues to function across all telecom networks and that no shutdown has taken place. The authority also rejected speculation linking the firewall’s status to the ongoing 5G spectrum auction, urging the public to rely on verified information rather than unconfirmed online claims.
Cybersecurity experts warned that any abrupt or unregulated deactivation of the firewall could expose national networks to serious security threats. According to IT specialists, the system is deeply integrated into network infrastructure, making the idea of a “one-button shutdown” both impractical and unsafe.
The absence of an immediate statement from the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications contributed to confusion, particularly on social media platforms. However, PTA reiterated that the firewall falls within its regulatory mandate, while coordination with the Ministry of IT and the Interior Ministry remains an essential part of overall oversight.
Senator Kamran Murtaza emphasized the need for a formal briefing in Parliament, stating that transparency is critical to maintaining public trust and countering misinformation. Telecom operators also supported PTA’s stance, confirming that firewall operations remain uninterrupted nationwide.
The clarification comes at a crucial time as Pakistan continues to strengthen its digital infrastructure and cybersecurity framework alongside the planned rollout of 5G services. Authorities have reassured citizens that both national security and stable internet connectivity remain top priorities.
