PTA to Launch GIS-Based Portal for Nationwide Telecom Network Monitoring

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced plans to develop a GIS-based web portal aimed at strengthening oversight of telecom network coverage, infrastructure deployment, and service quality across Pakistan.

According to the regulator, the initiative will integrate geographic information with telecom performance data into a centralized digital platform, enabling more effective monitoring and evidence-based regulatory decision-making.

Centralized Mapping of Telecom Infrastructure

The proposed portal will gather network-related data from telecom operators nationwide, including coverage information from remote and underserved regions such as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

By digitally mapping infrastructure assets and coverage footprints, the system will allow PTA to identify regional disparities, assess service availability, and support targeted policy measures to improve connectivity in lagging areas.

Interactive Monitoring and Data Analysis

Through the GIS platform, PTA will be able to visualize telecom towers, network coverage zones, and key service performance indicators on interactive maps. Officials said the portal will help detect coverage gaps, monitor quality-of-service trends, and track the pace of infrastructure expansion by operators.

The platform is also expected to include analytical tools to support future network planning, enabling the regulator to evaluate where upgrades or new deployments are most needed to improve user experience.

Project to Be Managed from Islamabad

According to PTA’s notice, the project will be managed from its headquarters in Islamabad and forms part of broader efforts to enhance transparency, efficiency, and data-driven regulation in the telecom sector.

Once operational, the GIS-based portal is expected to play a key role in improving regulatory visibility and ensuring more equitable telecom service availability across the country.
